For months now I have been porting in Puerto Vallarta but we never stay late enough to get a good dinner. Well times have changed and we finally left Puerto Vallarta at about 8pm, plenty of time to get a great meal. Since the southerner and I are not at a late port to get a Christmas dinner this year we decided that this was going to be it. I had spoke to a few people on the ship for some ideas and decided on the Vista Grill. This was not going to be a cheap Mexican taco type of meal, needless to say we were both very excited having had typical Mexican food for months now.
Vista Grill sits on the side of a huge hill and over looks the ocean and Puerto Vallarta’s downtown. We arrived just as the sun started to set. The view alone was worth the price of the meal. The seating was very open, inside and outside. They had a nice big wine cellar and you know we had to dip into that.
We sat down and ordered a glass of white and a red. They have a big wine list by the bottle and a decent by the glass list. The Southerner got an Italian Pinot Grigio and I headed straight to South America and got a Malbac, my favorite red. After we ordered our wine they brought over pistachio whipped butter (as seen above) and freshly baked breads, some had brie in the middle of them. When that came we knew we were in “that” kind of place. Actually, when we walked in we new we were in a more upscale Mexican restaurant.
The menu came and it was a hard decision. The Southerner and I tend to over order because we want to try so many things. This time we were smart about it and ordered two salads and three appetizers. This was a good way to try a bunch of different dishes and it ended up being the perfect amount. The waiter was terrific asking us how we wanted to course it out. We started with the salads and then the soup and finished with the meats.
Apple and cranberry salad
Pear and walnut salad
Crab and corn soup
Short ribs
Leg of lamb over tortilla
The food was delicious. The Lamb was my favorite. It has been since Victoria B.C since we had eaten like that. We were well over do. It turned out to be a great and very romantic Christmas dinner. With the great food, great service and amazing view we look forward to our late ports in Puerto Vallarta come January.
