Forking Tasty Suppers - Back to the Future all photos by Kun Kim

Doc, this is heavy!

It was over two months ago now that the Deloreon and MJF blessed the deck with their 80’s epic time travel tale. Let’s blame it on a rip in the time space continuum that caused us to delay this recap for so long. Truth is we wanted to highlight some of the quirky and specific details the evening contained in a more unique way than we normally do.

For those who are unfamiliar with our dinners…

Saturday, August 24th at 7pm.
Great Scott! Here’s the skinny on the fat.

Starts: 7:00pm (sips and appetizers)
Ends: 11pm (really, when the film is over)
Donation: $85 (make a reservation below)
Movie: Back to the Future

We’re going back…to the future. We realize that doesn’t make much sense but we had to open with it. We love everything about this dinner including the Huey Lewis music we’ll get to use at various points in the evening. Ant and I love this movie. In fact the entire trilogy was in heavy rotation until the mid 90′s at the Anello’s house. Besides the amazing story, epic-joke-per-second, MJF prime on screen magic, we’ll draw from the entire trilogy to craft this menu. Expect some 1985 dishes and some 1955 throwbacks but we’re thinkin’ we might blast you into 2015 and dip you even further back to the wild west of 1885. What that means exactly…we have not completely figured out but we’re working on it.

Expect a menu of enchantment under the sea, the word that makes Marty lose his cool and some inside jokes translated to menu items. We’ll augment that with some of our favorite dishes from the decades that the movie is set in. 2015 will be tough, but we’ll try. Ant and I hope you can join us for what will be a multi-decade adventure not only into our childhood but into the childhood of our predecessors.

More on Reel Tasty:

Jason and Anthony pair a 5 course gourmet meal for 20 friends, some new and some old on a HUGE deck in Brooklyn. As the name implies, we will be screening a movie during the meal. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of time pre-entree to mingle, catchup and meet some new friends. Once the sun goes down we will role the film in all its two story high glory. This is an experiment, so we are not sure how much silence or chatting will go on. That’s for you to decide. We hope you will come out and enjoy yourselves with us this summer. See you on the deck.

Forking Tasty Suppers - Vicki Cristina Barcelonaall photos by Kun Kim

Olé Tapas!

Last week we brought a little bit of Catalonia to Brooklyn with our 18 dish Spanish tapas feast. As we were finalizing the menu we just couldn’t bring ourselves to edit out any of the dishes. We cut it all different ways and the traditional, simple recipes needed to stay. The twists on our favorites from our time in Barcelona last year couldn’t get cut either. It left us in a quandary that in the end, we threw our hands up and put our heads down into execution.

For those who are unfamiliar with our dinners, Forking Tasty’s Suppers is our attempt to bring back dinnertime by seating a bunch of strangers around a table to share some food, conversation and laughter. For this one we pulled out all the stops bringing our memories of Spain to the dinner table. To that end the one thing we felt didn’t quite go as planned was the story telling. Part of the fun for us is that we get to serve food that not only tastes great but is backed by a reason for being on the menu. More times than not that reason stems from a personal experience and we love passing them along to our guests when we serve. So, as we…

Toro to Tapas. Here’s the skinny on the fat.

Starts: 6:30pm (cocktails and appetizers)

Movie: Vicki Cristina Barcelona

Hola Espania! Our next dinner has tons of inspiration packed into every moment and morsel. From the menu to the movie to the table we’ve got this Catalonian thing down. Inspiration is drawn heavily from Missus Tasty and my journey through Spain last December. We ate our way through Barcelona for almost a week before surrendering to the jamon gods. Ant’s frequent ports of call in Barcelona make it one of his many second homes. He’s got snack spots in town that locals don’t even know exist. In short, we can eat our way from Barcelonetta to Park Guell without missing a beat. Now, we’re turning that knowledge and excitement into a multi-course evening under the stars and our big screen.

The movie holds just as special a place in our hearts as Catalonian cuisine does. I admit, my wife has not shot at me (yet) but there is nothing more we love than a spitfire, super gorgeous, mega intelligent woman speaking her mind in inappropriate places. (That might not be completely true) If the food isn’t caliente enough the on screen antics of Maria Elena will certainly fill the void. Mix in the suave Juan Antonio and two American woman looking for adventure, one more than the other, and we’ve got ourselves a supper.

Ant and I hope you can join us for what we promise will be an unforgettable evening with lots of personal stories to accompany the many, many, many (did we say many?) dishes we’ve crafted for this 20 seat ONLY tapas throwdown.

Menu

It starts with $275 per pound ham. If that’s not enough to signal a killer menu the food cascade will shower the table with some 15 courses at moment. They are small tapas style courses remember but there will be plenty of bites to fill that stomach twice over. Come hungry. Expect Catalonia traditional staples with our Italian-American twists. As always, a selection of beer and wine will be served along the way from aperitivo to postres.

Recap-San Francisco Italian Treat Supper

San Francisco Italian Treat Supper

7 courses and counting

Every once in a while the timing works out so we can share a kitchen with some of our closest collaborators. Two weeks ago I found myself in the kitchen with long time friend and chef, Ben Long. His recent trip to Italy and my heritage spawned an idea to create a traditional Italian feast served in the traditional Italian sequence. More on that down the page a bit. With the help of a few specialty items Ben smuggled back from his trip, some surprise ingredients brought in by John “Chu” Churillo and a morning trip to the Asian farmers market in San Francisco, we were prepared to do my namesake some solid justice.

For those who are unfamiliar with our dinners, Forking Tasty’s Suppers is our attempt to bring back dinnertime by seating a bunch of strangers around a table to share some food, conversation and laughter. For this one we flew out west to spread the love at SPICE Supper clubs 8-seat chefs table.

As each guest arrived they were greeted with an immediate sense of home. From the wooden gate they walked through to enter the space, through the softly lit garden and up the stairs into the victorian foyer, each guests arrival procession prepared them for the homey atmosphere that awaited them in the dining room. As the first guests sipped their welcome drink waiting for the remainder of their dining partners to arrive, the kitchen was busy preparing…

REEL TASTY: King Kong

Talk about a backdrop.

It’s very rare that we pull off a dinner that has such direct connection between the location and the film we’re screening. This was that kind of perfect storm. I moved into my office on 34th and fifth about two years ago. Day two I wandered up to the roof and saw the Empire State Building looking down on me. To my left was the perfect movie screen (found on the side of the building just south). From that moment I’ve been working with the Wework crew, the owners of the building, to make this event happen. A few weeks ago my vision of Dinner with King Kong under the Empire State Building became a reality.

For those who are unfamiliar with our dinners, Reel Tasty is Forking Tasty’s summer supper club where we screen a movie on a 2 story building while our guests sample some of our latest and tastiest gourmet creations. For this one we decided to pick some of our favorite NYC neighborhoods to inspire the cuisine. Although we screened the original 1933 film, no CGI for us, we chose recipes that…

REEL TASTY: The Birds

Tweet this!

It all started a few months back over some stiff drinks and a few oysters. Three food fanatics, me one of them, sipped and slurped as we brainstormed dinner themes. As the night grew longer the ideas piled up. Some good, some bad. As a counter idea to the unique but crazy thought of an illegal narcotics dinner I boldly suggested “ALL BIRDS”. I’d envisioned a multi-plate dinner where every course contained a bird part. Smiles grew into the cheeks of my two gastro-passionate buddies and I knew we had a winner.

For those who are unfamiliar with our dinners, Reel Tasty is Forking Tasty’s summer supper club where we screen a movie on a 2 story building while our guests sample some of our latest and tastiest gourmet creations. The seats are usually first come first serve but every once in a while we collaborate with some old friends. A while back we pulled off a Creole/Cajun feast in 102 degree heat for the Gastronauts, an adventurous eating group in NYC.

One of my two dinner brainstorming buddies was Curtis, the Gastronauts fearless leader and organizer. The other was…

Last night we pulled off another successful collaboration with our friends over at Gastronauts. You may remember our last creole/cajun collaboration. This year, the Forking Tasty crew along with my kitchen collaborators from Whisk & Ladle, went in a totally different direction than last time. About four months ago over a few oysters and meticulously crafted cocktails at a popular Williamsburg Brooklyn haunt, we brainstormed an 11 course, plated, all bird menu. Below is the final draft of that session. Stay tuned for a post with a breakdown and picture of each delectable dish.
