The NYC Hot Sauce Expo returns this weekend to heat up the borough once again with 50+ craft hot sauce makers. As always there is far more than the next hot sauce tasting to keep your burning tongue distracted. Aside from their marquee event, Guinness Book of Records Carolina Reaper Pepper Eating Contest, there will be more chihuahua’s under one roof than a Mexican cartoon kennel at the Chihuahua Beauty Pageant. Maybe the most off beat event at any food focused festival we’ve attended. We’re especially looking forward to finding out what the Volcanic Peppers Spicy Pizza of DOOM Challenge is and how we conquer it without killing ourselves. The event list deepens with everything from Hottest Ramen to Slaytanic Burrito contest to the prestigious Hot Sauce Hall of Fame inductions. We covered this back in 2016 and High River Sauces, the event sponsors, growth clearly has been massive, and inherently hot. With two full days of pepper craziness, prepare yourself. Fill your camelbak with some cold milk and pick up a jumbo loaf of Bimbo as you head to Greenpoint for the mouth burning mania. April 14th and 15th from 10am-6pm in Brooklyn.

Sandwiches are a perfected item. That’s why this competition is like a battle royal between the most perfect or perfect things. Like Diamonds vs Puppies OR 1986 Mötley Crüe vs a 1974 Ferrari Dino. Of course none of that is edible which means less fun than the Thrillist Hall of Heroes happening this Sunday. The heaviest of NYC hitters will be on deck including Melt Shop, Cafe Habana and Sticky’s Finger Joint. $65 gets you all the sandos you can shovel in that gaping hole of amazement you call your mouth. Wash it down courtesy of Pepsi 1893. Sunday, April 10th from 1PM-4PM @ The Bowery Hotel in NYC.
Brooklyn Brewery is seemingly involved in everything. There’s not a weekend where we don’t see them at some awesome event, concert or happening. Their main home being 8 blocks from FTHQ gives us incredible access to their next moves like the launch of Brooklyn Brewery Mash. Taking themselves on the road, pop-up collab style, the guys and girls over at BB decided to mini-tour some of our countries best eating cities and smash it together with their brews. The micro-event format includes events like a free concert at the Philly landmark Union Transfer or rare beer and Chinese food mashup between Brooklyn Brewery Chef Andrew Gerson and the team from Bing Bing Dim Sum. This gives us an HUGE excuse to head to Philly. August 25th – 28th in Philadelphia.
NYC has more food festivals than stomach space. Sometimes it’s hard to pick the one that will not only be tasty but be manageable. We’re not promising elbow room but with 50+ restaurants curated from all boroughs, the ninth annual Village Voice Choice Eats is one you should attend. Start those stomach aerobics, down some kombucha and grab tickets before they are gone. They sold out last year. Friday, March 11th @ Metropolitan Pavilion from 6-10pm.
Returning this year from last years launch, the Queens Night Market summons the foodie crowd out to Corona, arguably the heart of the original NYC food scene. While hovering over Peruvian, Dominican, Indian, Ecuadorian and Irish neighborhoods while on the 7 train, ready those tastebuds for a similar cultural explosion of food, drink and sometimes music. Jump off at the 111th St. station and head to towards Hall of Science parking lot. Don’t miss the shark sandos, chicken fried bacon and fresh Ecuadorian juices. Starting April 23rd on Saturdays from 6PM-Midnight @ New York Hall of Science in Queens.
