A buddy of mine and I had not seen each other in a long time and wanted to catch up with some lunch. We hopped in the car and headed from Greenpoint Brooklyn to Bed-Stuy. We had a few choice on our list of places to go but we ended up at Dave’s Brisket House Deli. The name alone sounded like some good eats…

I have just returned to the states and I was a little groggy from all the travel. All I wanted was a sandwich and there are many places I could go to get a great sandwich but I am known to make may own sandwiches. I love my sandwiches and they are usually better than most I buy…

Il Bambino – Astoria, Queens, New York

About ‘Wich Hunting: Anthony and I have travelled the world eating everything from Balut in the Philippines to blood sausage in Argentina. In every destination there has always been a sandwich shop. Some were good and some were bad but they all had their unique take on this ubiquitous meal. The origin of the sandwich is highly debated and we’ll dive into that on our journey as we discover, taste and debate the best sandwiches in the world.

A Quick Hit From Venice

My buddy Sean Bell and I sent out to explore Venice. Sean had been there before and I asked him for the Sean Bell Tour of Venice. We set out in the morning and had a lot of walking to do that day. Sean, (not a morning person fyi, typical musician) needed a quick fix before we get into the heart of Venice. The video shows the typical sandwich you can get at numerous cafes around Venice, let alone most of italy. However, this sandwich was filled with tuna and olives and was one of Sean’s favorite. Me on he other hand, I can’t stand the smell of tunafish let alone the taste. It was just the pick-me-up Sean needed to give me a great tour of Venice. We walked and saw one of the most unique cities I have ever been to. Where in a normal city you have road, Venice has rivers. Cities have cars, Venice has boats. It’s different but a very beautiful city.

Home Made Tuna Melt

Again with raiding the pantry and refrigerator for lunch. Today I cobbled together a long time comfort food favorite. It has long been in my top 5 post “night out” breakfasts of all time. It’s versatility is unmatched as it works as a dinner just as well as a b-fast. The three simple components themselves, when broken down, have thousands of variations.

From bottom to top

1. A solid stage in which to build the star
2. The star-Tuna salad
3. A blanket to keep the star snug

Think about it. What’s your favorite tuna melt? Let me know in the comments. I’ll make my favorite from your answers one next week.

Saigon Sandwiches-San Francisco

I have been to Vietnam. I have had this sandwich a hundred times. The above is raved about as the best in San Francisco but I sure hope they are wrong. I realize I am not in Saigon and I don’t hold this sammie to the standards that only a third world, health code-less country can achieve but this barely beats Blimpie. Tasty but not worth the trek from my Noe Valley temp digs to the edge of the Tenderloin. Seems to me that…

Mike’s Deli from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

It was a perfect Friday afternoon and two friends of mine had planned to spend the day at The Bronx Zoo. It’s been a really really really long time since I had been there. I actually don’t even remember it at all. Apparently that is where I got my favorite stuffed animal as a kid (Rocky Raccoon). I was really excited to see all the animals but before we go to look at these amazing animals we made a pit stop on Authur Ave to an Italian market place.

Verelli's

This sandwich started many years ago when I was about 17 years old. It gained super stardom by Jimmy Bruccalari, one of Ant’s oldest friends. Jimmy came over the house one afternoon and explained to Ant, my parents and me that he had been frequenting a new market in town. Verelli’s was Jimmy’s lunch stop everyday for about a week . Each day he would try out a different sandwich. Johnny, a short Mexican man who worked the deli counter, made Jimmy’s sandwich everyday. On the 5th or 6th day Jimmy realized that no matter what he ordered Johnny would always ask the same question.

Florida

Mortadela, sopressata, provolone, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar. That is the V&S Special. There may not be a better sandwich in all of South Florida or, dare I say, Brooklyn. I know, I know very bold words. Well, let me explain. These guys are Italians from up north. They get it. They lived it. But, maybe smarter than me, they moved down to sunny Boca Raton 30 years ago and now are the number one game in town to satiate all the snowbird and transplants desire for a “real” Italian sandwich…
