Friday afternoon in the Bronx

It was a perfect Friday afternoon and two friends of mine had planned to spend the day at The Bronx Zoo. It’s been a really really really long time since I had been there. I actually don’t even remember it at all. Apparently that is where I got my favorite stuffed animal as a kid (Rocky Raccoon). I was really excited to see all the animals but before we go to look at these amazing animals we made a pit stop on Authur Ave to an Italian market place. That is where Mike’s Deli lives. My buddy Jim was supposed to come with us and asked if we could stop at Mike’s Deli before we head to the zoo. I thought FOOD,…ahhh, of course! It was Jims idea but never showed. I am still not sure what happened but Jim missed out. We had to journey on with him.
We made it to Mike’s Deli and what a great find. The sandwiches were so good. The Hero bread was soft and fresh, fresh mozzarella everywhere, fresh Italian meats poring over counter tops, Italian music playing in the background. In a word, Superb! My two friends got the King David hero (a Mike’s deli favorite) The King David is Sopressata with chunks of 4 year old parmigiano, roasted peppers and basil. I got Da True Bronx Tale hero. This hero is Mortadella, fresh mozzarella, shavings of sharp provolone, tomato with oregano, basil and olive oil. These hero’s were big and we had to do some sharing to get the full experience. Anytime anyone want to head up to Mike’s, I’m game.
Then we were off to the zoo.
These are my two favorite scenes from the zoo.
