Forked with Abby Bernstein
I met Abby because I inadvertently licensed one of her songs for a Manifold Project. All on the up and up of course. Abby reached out to say thanks and see what else we were up to. She’s made the move from singer-songwriter on a solo track, to using her talents for corporate, commercial and content development. She finds this more exciting and rewarding. I can understand that. Her gift of gab doesn’t hurt when it comes to convincing creators to let her work out the music for their piece. Aside from the food chat we spent a lot of time talking about storytelling. By the time we finished the meal she had me hooked on RISK and the burgeoning NY Storytelling scene. Seriously. Tomorrow I am heading to my third different spot. This time in LIC to catch some open mic stories. Here’s more of what she enlightened me on in between bites.
What do you think when i say dinnertime?
Dinnertime makes me think of comfort, warm bread, and good conversation. (Apologies if what I just wrote sounds like a cheesy dating website by the way …)
What is your favorite meal memory?
I am a runner and my favorite meal memories are always after races. For some reason, food — specifically, tacos and beer– just tastes better after I’ve accomplished a long distance and it’s the ultimate feeling of relaxation to sit down and stuff my face.
If you could have your last meal with one person who would it be? Why?
I would say my dog but she isn’t a person. Maybe a comedian because if I’m going to die immediately after the meal, I would like to have some laughs beforehand … Louis CK would be perfect, and he would have great things to say about death.
What did we eat?
The new, hot, Flatiron, whisky forward, restaurant Maysville was Abby’s spot of choice. In front of her is squash soup with apples, almonds and crispy kale. I had a broccoli sandwich that was amazing. It’s also no longer on the menu. Neither of us had whisky.
