Forking Tasty – Lever Farms South Carolina from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
I went strawberry picking with the southerner this past week. It kicked off a week long road trip to Key West, more posts to come on that. We went over to Lever Farms on the opening day of picking. We ended up with five baskets of strawberries and one strawberry pastry. We ended up even using the southerners ice cream maker and made fresh strawberry ice cream and strawberry shortcakes later on in the road trip. Strawberries are the best.

Forking Tasty – Milking A Cow from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
While the southerner and I were at the Middleton Place we just happen to be in the farm area when they were milking the cows. I got to produce my own milk in a bucket. It felt a little strange at first but all in all it was fun… for about 30 seconds. See in the video how I make a couple squirts of milk and then I was outta there.

Our last restaurant before heading out of Charleston was at Poogan’s Porch. Poogan is a dog that lived at the restaurant and passed away. They even have a statue of Poogan in the front yard.

The southerner and I spent the day shopping on Kings St and it was getting late. We were hungry but didn’t want to eat too much and spoil our dinner later on that night. A friend of ours told us how she really enjoyed Sermet’s. We were not even looking for the restaurant when we decided to eat it was right in front of us. There are two Sermet’s, Sermet’s Corner (which is where we went, 276 King Street, Charleston – (843) 853-7775) and Sermet’s Courtyard.

The southerner and I spent the day walking around town and soaking in the rich history that Charleston has to offer. Of course we got hungry. We ended up at a restaurant called Coast where they had half price bottles of wine that particular night, lucky us. We had a couple of fish dishes for dinner but that is not what this post is about. It was where we went after for dessert that is postable. We walked down to Market Street and went to Kaminsky’s Café. We wanted another glass of wine and a bite of dessert. The great thing about Kaminsky is they make their desserts fresh everyday which means that don’t always have the same desserts. They don’t put the desserts on the menu but in a glass case as soon as you walk in. Great placement for their glass case, and I am sure many people have to stop and come in as they walk by and see the gorgeous desserts in the window. We settled on a double chocolate cheesecake….

Lizard’s Thicket from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
This is going to be my last blog about my visit down in South Carolina until the next time I head down to visit. I asked Kelsey to take me to a southern style lunch and she knew just the place. Lizard’s Thicket is as southern as you can get. Southern cooking has a lot of fried food and hot desserts. I like the food in the south but I could not eat like this all the time. It’s is not the healthiest diet, especially for me

When I was down in South Carolina Kelsey and her parents wanted to take me to eat some southern barbeque. That was definitely on my agenda while I was down for my visit. They decided to bring me to Carolina Wings & Ale. We ordered slightly family style. I made sure we all ordered something different because I wanted to try everything. We ordered fried mushroom, chicken wings, pulled pork, ribs with a carolina dry rub, baby back ribs and five different sauces to dip in. It was a lot of fun and it was really good. Love a place with a lot of sauces.

Home Cookin at the Johnson’s from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
I had a great week down south with my girlfriend Kelsey. On our last night before heading home to New York, Kelsey’s parents, Mark and Karen, wanted to cook us dinner, Southern Style. Mark and Karen are such great and kind people. They really made me feel welcome in their home. As much as I wanted to help out in the kitchen there was no need to. Karen had taken care of everything the night before and the only thing left was to heat it up. As for Mark, he already had the Pork Loin on the grill on a low temp already cooking by the time Kelsey and I got to the house. Dinner and dessert was delicious. Thanks so much for everything Mark and Karen.

I am down in South Carolina to visit my girlfriend Kelsey. I have never been down in the Carolina’s before. I like it down here. It’s quiet, about 15 – 20 degrees warmer than New York, and there is a lot of great southern foods for me to try. Kelsey’s family are big fans of Forking Tasty and know I am going to be looking for some typical southern food that I am not used to up north…
