I am down in South Carolina to visit my girlfriend Kelsey. I have never been down in the Carolina’s before. I like it down here. It’s quiet, about 15 – 20 degrees warmer than New York, and there is a lot of great southern foods for me to try. Kelsey’s family are big fans of Forking Tasty and know I am going to be looking for some typical southern food that I am not used to up north.

On the first day I got to South Carolina it was Kelsey and my anniversary so I am going to have to keep those meals private. The second day I got a tour of the neighboring towns and city where Kelsey and her family live. Some towns are small and some towns are really REALLY small. If you close your eyes for about 10 seconds while driving through you may miss the town. Columbia is the near by city where the University of South Carolina is. It’s a big school and there are lots of restaurants and bars all over the place. After checking out the city for a while we got thirsty and a little hungry. We stopped off at The Flying Saucer.

This place has a ridiculous beer menu. They had a wall about 50 feet long with beer taps. There were plaques all over the walls of people who have tried over 200 different beers that they offer. We all got a beer and sat outside to enjoy the weather. Yes, outside for all you northerners reading this. Kelsey’s brother came and met us at the bar for a drink and suggested we get an appetizer, a Saucer Bratzel. This is a big pretzel with Swiss cheese and sliced beer brat with spicy mustard. It was really good with the cold beers we were drinking. I’ve never had a pretzel like that before and I don’t think the pretzel guy on the streets of NY will be cooking up something like this

I had a really good time hanging out with the family and finally meeting Kelsey’s brother. They are all fun to be around and definitely know where to go for a beer. They have all taken me in and will be having many meals together while I am in South Carolina for the week. Look for the next few posts to have a lot of southern hospitality in them.

It is so funny how their are 12 million people in New Your City and you can still bump in to people you know in random places. For such a huge city it can really be small sometimes. I was out to dinner at Mad For Chicken with friends and who just happens to be sitting at the table next to mine. My friend Sunny who I haven’t seen in months. We decided to meet up for a bite and some drinks later on the following week.

We and another friend ended up at a restaurant/bar called Banc, which I just happened to live above. How convenient! The Banc has always been a good restaurant in the neighborhood. Good food and a nice bar. We did decided to eat family style and share a few plates. The best thing we got was the Flat Bread Flat Iron Steak. I could have ordered another for myself it was so good. I highly recommend it. We also got crab cakes with a pepper chutney and quesada’s. It was a good time catching up with friends. Good food and drinks always makes me smile too.

I got back from the ship in July and came home to a summons for Jury duty in my stack of mail. Oops! I called and they told me to come in Monday. This is a very long day of pure boredom, as most of you know who have gone through this process, and when we braked for lunch I thought I should treat myself. I walked around downtown for a little and started to TXT my lawyer friends. I figured if anyone knows where to eat near the court house it would be them. However, I was running out of time for their TXT back and stumbled upon Spaghetti Western. It is a bar but figured I’d give it a try. I ordered a chicken parm hero (it was not on the menu but they made it for me). It was pretty good. I’d order it there again. It came with a mixed green salad with tasty vinaigrette and a piece of cantaloupe. The staff was friendly as I sat at the bar but when I was done it was back to the boredom of jury duty. It may be our civil right but they could make it a little more exciting while we just sit there for hours. No Laptops, cell phones or cameras are allowed. What’s a boy to do with his time???

This Friday we hit this restaurant Miranda in Williamsburg and then proceeded to dance it up a t Black Betty’s until Joe fell out, Marcella started slurring and I went to go make breakfast. But lets start back at the beginning.

The whole show kicked off with some of this delicious sun dried tomato paste and olive oil mixture and a hard cheese plate that was not the usual characters disguised on a super-cool porcelin tray. Some interesting smoked gouda and some very rare spanish cheese that i can not remember the name of.

Then we continued with Ravioli in a poblano mole. Followed by some super fresh empanadas. One pork and one cheese.

Entrees were a super moist(I am big on super in this post) cod and a killer braised short rib.

We finished up with like the densest milk cake you have ever….I mean EVER!(pictured at top) and a few other desserts. It was a celebration after all. Above is the Chocolate mouse like cake. All filled up Marcella decided she wanted to dance. Apparently the sugar high was in full swing and she needed to burn off some fuel. 20 minutes later we were in Black Betty’s with a cocktail in hand warming up as the DJ warmed us up.
