Alaska Food Highlights from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
Alaska was fun but now I am in Mexico. However, before I move on and start blogging about taco’s, enchiladas, and cerveza I put together a little video of the best of the best from Alaska. Enjoy!

In Juneau Alaska I mentioned the hit and can’t miss spot to eat is Tracy’s Crab Shack. However, a close and impressive second is the Twisted Fish. I was really impressed with the type of seafood this restaurant served. A couple unique items to mention, Coconut Salmon strips with a berry chutney and Baked Salmon in a Puffed Pastry served in a reduction sauce. I will be in Juneau again in September and I may have to have lunch and Tracy’s and then dinner in the Twisted Fish. I have to admit, for a while there I was not to impressed with the restaurants in Juneau but I have found a couple gems.

Pelmeni – Juneau Alaska from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
My last day in Juneau I took a canoe to the Mendenhall Glacier. We were paddling for a while to get to the glacier and I worked up an appetite. Usually when I am really hungry I want the perfect meal. The perfect meal would be something delicious that will fill me up and doesn’t cost too much. I decided to get my last hit at Tracy’s King Crab Shack. I have to say that is my favorite place to go in Juneau to eat. However, it may be delicious but it didn’t fill me up. I walked by a crepe stand and saw a cheeseburger crepe on the menu. That sounded interesting and I would have liked to try it but they closed by the time that I decided to get it.

I am on a mission to find the best of the best in each port that I go to in Alaska. In Juneau I found the best at Tracy’s King Crab Shack. I was having a hard time finding the best in Skagway. I really was not sure if I was going to achieve deliciousness here. I needed a little help from a friend…

Juneau, Tracy’s Crab Shack from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
Tracy’s King Crab Shack is in a word fantastic. My friend Jason has been telling me about the shack for 2 weeks. He said you have not had king crab until you go to Tracy’s. This has been by far the best place I have come to in Alaska. I wish I was able to meet Tracy but she was on her way to Newport Road Island to submit her chowder into a competition. Let me tell you, she may win. I’ll let the video do the talking.

There is not that much going on in Skagway Alaska. There are a lot of jewelry stores and old brothels that are now bars. I did manage to take a hike up a mountain. There are 2 hikes, upper and lower Dewey. I only had time for lower Dewey. It was fun with beautiful views. When I got back to town I was hungry. I found the one Indian restaurant in town (Bombay Curry) and didn’t have time to sit down and have a meal there so I took it to go. After I went in I found out that this was there 3rd day open. They are very nice there and I ordered the Butter Chicken and some Dal with Naan. I brought it to the ship and it finally felt good to have some Indian food on the ship, which never happens. Not sure why when there are a bunch of Indian chiefs on board. You would think, right, whatever. The food was decent but the Naan was perfect. Nice and fluffy with lots of sauce to dip it in. I love to scoop up my dal with my Naan.

Annebelles, Ketchikan from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
My colleague Will gave me a tip one of his favorite sandwich in Ketchikan, the Halibut BLT. You can find this delicious sandwich at Annebelle’s Keg and Chowder House. I took a seat at the bar and had a great experience. I am not a huge bacon fan, I know, you can wipe the shock off your face. However, the bacon with the Halibut was not very over powering and it gave the sandwich really nice flavor. I also ordered a side of their famous chowder. The chowder was good but not as good as Cheers in Boston. The nice surprise at the end was there was a piece of bacon waiting for me at the bottom smothered in chowder. What a nice surprise. Thanks Will!

Juneau, Wok & Teriyaki from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
It had been a long time since I have had sushi that was good. The Ship sushi is not the best. I don’t usually have that much sushi because it’s a lot of rice for me. However, once in a while it hits the spot. We have a late port in Juneau and I decided to get some sushi at Wok & Teriyaki before meeting my friends over at the Viking. The Viking is the local pub most crew go to to let loose for a little while before heading back to the ship. I loved both places.

Fish House/Kechi Candies, Kechikan Alaska from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
Of all the ports in Alaska I find I really like the town in Ketchikan. I had been there last year before heading over to Japan. There are a few places that I didn’t have time to go to in my last visit. One of those places was Fish House. I wanted to try their double salmon chowder and then asked the staff what else they recommend. The Chowder was good but I am still partial to Clam Chowder. The Halibut Tacos were really good recommendation. Glad I asked the staff for the recommendation. They were crispy and had a nice sauce to go with it.
After lunch I headed to Kechi Candies for some dessert. I am not even going to say anything and I’ll let the video do the talking.

Liarsville, Skagway from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
I escorted an excursion with the guests to Klondike summit and walked across a suspension bridge. It was a cloudy day but we could still see the white-capped mountains in the distance. The suspension bridge was over a river that was rushing with freezing water. All the snow is starting to melt up here in Alaska causing the rush of water and tons of waterfalls around the Klondike area. It was a cold day but the views were spectacular. We had to cross over to Canada to get to the summit.
