A few friends and I headed into Bilbao Spain to go see the Guggenheim Museum. It was spectacular. Some really cool and fun art was on display. Check out the vimeo for upcoming videos from Spain. All four of us wanted to check out the city a bit and grab (what else) a bite to eat.
After walking deeper and deeper into the city we noticed that there were not many restaurants around but lots of “bars” like Eliptica. Let me define what I mean by a bar. It is not what you and I think of as a bar like an Irish pub but more like a small bar/luncheonette in one. There is a full bar (alcohol) and lots of people hanging at the bar having a smoke and a café. However you can also order some food that is displayed in a glass case on the bar. Most people would just look in the glass case and get a half a sandwich while having a café and a cigarette for desert. I am surely not most people. I was looking for more than what would be a snack for me.
Some of us ordered pizzas that were really thick. They looked good and there were no complaints from my friends but I didn’t have a taste. Josh ordered a chicken and a squid salad. That was really good. The oil dressing was really light and the chicken was moist. We also ordered French Fries but they were not called that. Not sure what they were but basically we got fried potato cubes with a mild Tabasco sauce on them served with toothpicks. They were yummy. I ordered 2 half sandwiches, one had chicken and cheese sprinkled on top of the bread and the other had Eggs, mayo, and tomato on toasted bread. Both were good but I have personally made way better sandwiches in my time. When I was done with those I was pondering on getting another sandwich. Then all of a sudden the waitress/bartender came walking out of the back with this steaming mountain of meat with this sauce dripping off and served it to the guy sitting at the table in front of me. It looked so good. I caught the bartender’s eye and asked for one. She seemed so excited to give it to me, she said it was delicious. I new I did the right thing. She told me it was veal which made me even happier because it is one of my favorite meats to eat. It finally came and there was plenty of sauce and bread for a scarpetta (Italian for dip your bread in the sauce and sop up it up) So, I started to cut into the dish and it was a bit fatty. I kept cutting and cutting and cutting until …. Well… There was not one bit of meat on this dish. It was bone, FAT, and sauce. That was it. I had a bit of the fat just to make sure I had at least 1 and I probably should have done without it. I had a lot of scarpetta. I told the waitress “Todo gordo y no carne). She said that is typical of the dish. Well at least the sauce was good.
