I Made It To Africa

Forking Tasty – Bagatelle – Tunisia, Africa from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

After all the places I have visited I never once set foot in Africa. Well, that changed last week when we went to Tunisia. A couple buddies and I rented a cab for the day to have us go check out the sites but that is not what the cab driver had in mind. We paid to go and see 2 towns but he wanted to bring us back to the ship after 1 town. I had to be a bit of a New Yorker to get what we wanted without paying any more. Even in Africa the cab drivers are shiesty. It was hard to communicate with him but he knew English well enough to have a conversation. He said they speak English, French, and Italian there. Once I mentioned lunch the cab driver diverted the initial itinerary for the day and next thing we knew we were in Bagatelle Restaurant.

Forking Tasty – 5 Napkin Burger from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

My cousin wanted to meet up for some lunch and when my cousin wants to get together I know a burger is not to far away. He mentioned 5 Napkin Burger which I have heard a little bit about. I could not refuse so the southerner, my cousin and I headed to Hells Kitchen. In my head I was thinking a small burger joint. I couldn’t be more wrong.

Forking Tasty – Side Street Cafe – Bar Harbor from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

The Side Street Café is a nice family restaurant that is just off the main strip in Bar Harbor Maine. They have a rockin Lobster Roll. I found it one day trying to explore around the town. Each week after the discovery, I spent my afternoon munching on one of their Lobster Rolls. Don’t miss out if you are ever in Bar Harbor.

I recently have taken another contract and I am currently sailing in New England going from Boston to Montreal. Not the most exciting route when it comes to food but I am sure I will encounter a few surprises. My first surprise and my last port in the U.S. before heading into Nova Scotia was in Bar Harbor. A friend of mine and I were walking around town looking for the best lobster roll in Bar Harbor. In actuality, I don’t think you can get a bad lobster roll in Bar Harbor so it is more about where can I find the best deal….

As promised this post is all about the food at my wedding. Although, it is 3 months tardy. I can’t really believe how quickly the time has past. I am not exactly sure what happened but a little 48 hour mini-honeymoon in Philadelphia this weekend (stay tuned for that post soon) reminded me of what happens when my wife and I are left to plan eating a day at a time. Before we get into all this I feel compelled to give some of you a bit more context on the days events. First off, I married the Canadian. I have been coy in keeping her identity a bit secret over the years in this blog. Now that she is officially in the family you can expect some guest posts.

The Canadian, in case you have not followed the sloppy hidden path backwards to her identity, is of pure Indian decent. Her wonderful parents, my new in-laws, are from Bangalore and Mysore so her South Indian roots run deep. This has everything to do with the day starting with a traditional South Indian breakfast in the Gnesha temple in flushing Queens. The fact that we visited a year prior just to eat in the temple canteen, as did Tony Bourdain, heavily influenced our decision to have our ceremony here. Breakfast was straight from the heart of what South Indians eat daily and the preparation was…

Today was the southerners first NY Yankee game. It was bitter cold at the game and we needed some stadium food to warm up. I have done a post on the new Yankee Stadium and stopped by all the vendors but as we were walking by the NYSteak vendor something intrigued me. What looked like rotisserie chickens turned out to be giant Turkey legs. I have never seen that in the stadium before. I had to have one. It was about an hour before the game started and I new they would be the freshest before it starts sitting around for a while. This leg was almost the size of my head.

Our last restaurant before heading out of Charleston was at Poogan’s Porch. Poogan is a dog that lived at the restaurant and passed away. They even have a statue of Poogan in the front yard.

The southerner and I spent the day shopping on Kings St and it was getting late. We were hungry but didn’t want to eat too much and spoil our dinner later on that night. A friend of ours told us how she really enjoyed Sermet’s. We were not even looking for the restaurant when we decided to eat it was right in front of us. There are two Sermet’s, Sermet’s Corner (which is where we went, 276 King Street, Charleston – (843) 853-7775) and Sermet’s Courtyard.

I spent a week in South Carolina visiting the southerner and we decided to head on over to Charleston. I had never been before and only hear great things about the city. About a two hour drive, a hotwire hotel for 2 nights in the heart of the city and tons of places to eat, we were ready to go. We did our fair share of eating in three days. There are a ton of restaurants all over.

Forking Tasty, El Shrimp Bucket, Mazatlan from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

The Southerner and I had a little ATV adventure around Mazatlan and ended up at the El Shrimp Bucket. It was a really fun day but there was a small incident on the ATV. We had a minor accident and needed to know how to reverse but the guy we rented it from never showed us how. After the southerner jumped off the ATV to proclaim her innocence I put the ATV in neutral and had 2 Mexican guys help me push it back. The entire event was really hysterical. We were making a u-turn in front of a line of cars at a red light. Lets just say we never made a U it was more like an L into a telephone pole. We were fine and had a good laugh after. It was fun cruising around town on the ATV.
