What A Snack Is In Sicily

I recently took an excursion to Mt Etna, an active volcano in Sicily. It has had an eruption as recently as a week or 2 ago. It was amazing to see the left over lava flows from 2001 and 2002 among other lava flows over the years. I had never seen and active volcano let alone the largest in Europe. I was hoping to see some action but we just saw some smoke coming out of the top.

Forking Tasty – Sedef Bufe – Istanbul from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

One of the things I just had to do while in Istanbul was to eat a Doner Kabab. I was on the hunt to find one on my way to see some of the sites. Before I left the port I asked one of the local port information guys where he would go and eat. I was not sure if he would send me to his brother, cousins, friend place but I thought it was worth the risk. He told me it was not the cheapest place but the best quality. I don’t think he steered me wrong…

Forking Tasty – Bagatelle – Tunisia, Africa from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

After all the places I have visited I never once set foot in Africa. Well, that changed last week when we went to Tunisia. A couple buddies and I rented a cab for the day to have us go check out the sites but that is not what the cab driver had in mind. We paid to go and see 2 towns but he wanted to bring us back to the ship after 1 town. I had to be a bit of a New Yorker to get what we wanted without paying any more. Even in Africa the cab drivers are shiesty. It was hard to communicate with him but he knew English well enough to have a conversation. He said they speak English, French, and Italian there. Once I mentioned lunch the cab driver diverted the initial itinerary for the day and next thing we knew we were in Bagatelle Restaurant.

Forking Tasty Italian Ice Cream Sandwich, Palermo Sicily from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

A few posts ago Jay had a post about an ice cream sandwich called Literal Ice Cream Sandwich. Jay was not a fan at all. I’m a sandwich man and love making sandwiches out of everything. So I had to try the Literal Ice Cream sandwich. I went all the way to Palermo Sicily to try it out….

My cousin wanted to meet up for some lunch and when my cousin wants to get together I know a burger is not to far away. He mentioned 5 Napkin Burger which I have heard a little bit about. Forking Tasty – Side Street Cafe – Bar Harbor from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

The Side Street Café is a nice family restaurant that is just off the main strip in Bar Harbor Maine. They have a rockin Lobster Roll. I found it one day trying to explore around the town. Each week after the discovery, I spent my afternoon munching on one of their Lobster Rolls. Don’t miss out if you are ever in Bar Harbor.

Sometimes Mother Nature causes for a cruise ship to go off the regular itinerary. In this case it had been raining so much that we could not leave Quebec City and sail to Montreal because the water level was way to high and we could not fit the ship under power lines about 10 miles from the port in Montreal. This caused for a double over night in Quebec City. This is the second week in a row that this has happened. Which means dinners out in town….

One of the things that is great when you’re a crew member on a ship is when you stay at a port overnight. This will allow some of the crew to go out to dinner, which is rare on cruises. We had an overnight in Quebec City, which has a lot of restaurants. I walked around town a little early that day, around 3pm, to scout out and ask some local shop owners about there favorite restaurants in town and the most authentic restaurants. I had a few places that were mentioned a couple of times and they were not to far from the ship. I rounded up a couple people and off we went.

I recently have taken another contract and I am currently sailing in New England going from Boston to Montreal. Not the most exciting route when it comes to food but I am sure I will encounter a few surprises. My first surprise and my last port in the U.S. before heading into Nova Scotia was in Bar Harbor. A friend of mine and I were walking around town looking for the best lobster roll in Bar Harbor. In actuality, I don’t think you can get a bad lobster roll in Bar Harbor so it is more about where can I find the best deal….

….. continuing on with the road trip we found ourselves in Savannah Georgia. After dumping our stuff at a hotel we quickly headed down to River Street. River street is one of those rare street in America that allow you to drink alcohol on the streets. We took full advantage of this benefit before our ghost tour and dinner….
