Each week my ship’s homeport is in San Diego. We are there pretty early in the morning and the southerner’s parents were coming to visit. We met them at their hotel, the Holiday Inn across the street from the ship. We checked in their bags to the hotel and wanted to go get some brunch. I went up to the hotel’s front desk and ask “If you were going to go to brunch what restaurant would you want to go to?” Without hesitation she said Richard Walkers.

Nonsense happens at the holidays. I am sure for many families that comes in different forms. With no surprise my families nonsense comes in edible form. The crux of this derelict family trait is THE COOKIE TABLE. It sits in the corner of the dining room and taunts us all with silent sweetness. The first “official” cookie course doesn’t come until Christmas Eve but each of us quickly falls into temptation after the confectionery seduction uncrosses it’s proverbial legs. By the time dessert on Christmas Eve arrives each of has already dipped our fingers into one or more of the tightly sealed but loosely guarded cookie tins.
Let’s dig into this tradition and these baked menaces one by one…

For months now I have been porting in Puerto Vallarta but we never stay late enough to get a good dinner. Well times have changed and we finally left Puerto Vallarta at about 8pm, plenty of time to get a great meal. Since the southerner and I are not at a late port to get a Christmas dinner this year we decided that this was going to be it. I had spoke to a few people on the ship for some ideas and decided on the Vista Grill. This was not going to be a cheap Mexican taco type of meal, needless to say we were both very excited having had typical Mexican food for months now…

Thanks to The Canadian I now can travel with my chai tea. This wonderful gift was put into quick effect the other night once it was unwrapped and cleaned twice. Unfortunately I drank over half the rack myself which lead to a long night with morning showing up way too early.

Get on the mailing list for first dibs.
Supper Club In-A-Box is a DIY, home version of the monthly dinner party we throw in unique spaces around NYC. One of the main reasons we host our dinners is to bring people together and allow them to make new friends. We set the dinner in unexpected places and pair it all with delicious food which always makes it a little easier for our guests to bond.
This holiday season we decided to box up some of the magic so you can host your own supper club event and woo your friends. We have modeled this box after our REEL TASTY event, a dinema experience where guests share large, movie themed, plates of food with each other while we project a movie two stories high on an adjacent building. Everything you need is in the box. Just add friends and bake.

Forking Tasty – The Shrimp Factory – Mazatlan from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.
One of the great things about working on a ship is when you have family and friends visit you. Yes, they are vacation while you work but I find time to spend time with them. Thanksgiving week I had my parents come aboard and I took them to a bunch of restaurants around Mexico. Some of them I have already vlogged about like Pipi’s in Puerto Vallarta. There was a restaurant in Mazatlan that I have wanted to try since I came down to Mexico. I remember passing it in the taxi and salivating as we drove by. As hard as it was to hold myself back from going there, I was saving it to experience it with my parents.
Mazatlan is one of the shrimp Capitals of the world and what better restaurant to bring my parents than The Shrimp Factory. I’ll let the video tell the tail but the staff was super friendly and the food was delicious. I’m really happy I got to experience the multiple types of shrimp with my family.

Saturday I decided to fry some chicken. After 2 weeks of hints dropped by the Canadian I figured I couldn’t escape the gentle coaxing any longer. It’s not that I didn’t want fried chicken, it’s just that…well…it’s a big, smelly, oil riddled production that always leaves the far reaches of my apartment smelling like a roadside joint in north Georgia. In addition, you never make just fried chicken. The chicken is just the gateway to creamed spinach, fried potatoes, beans, beer and the occasional hard narcotic. Ok, that’s a step too far, unless you can overdose on canola oil. The picture above reveals the ultimate success in the aforementioned madness. It wasn’t until Sunday when the point of this post was revealed. After such a calorie-counting-less indulgence I decided to keep it simple and clean on Sunday. Or so I thought.
I popped into the supermarket late Sunday afternoon and…
