Home Cooking in December

In keeping with the lean and mean program I hunted down some fresh, local grown brussel sprouts this evening to augment the left over chicken in my refrigerator. I picked up a yellow onion along with the mini cabbages for a total of $1.43. Back at home, 2 chopped chipotle peppers and a 1/4 cup of leftover prosecco added some flavor.

All in the day was full of tasty. Lunch was…

Vietnam is known for it’s cheap eats but we decided to go to a resort where it is not so cheap. During the day we hiked into the marble mountains. They are quit amazing to look at. They just jet out from the ground from out of nowhere. They are not your typical looking mountains. Oh yeah, and they are marble. There are marble shops all around the mountains with some beautiful stuff. When you hike up the mountains there are caves you can go into and find temples. One of the caves was bombed in WWII and left big holes at the top of the cave where light shines as beams into the cave. It’s really cool and beautiful.

December Eating

Home Cooking in December

I need to get a couple things off my chest. I realized that neither Ant or I have posted something we cooked in over a month. Totally unacceptable in my book, especially considering that part of the reason this blog exists is because we grew up cooking, love to cook and love home cooked food. Now, we all know Anthony will not be posting any home cooked meals until he gets home from the boat or they retro fit his cabin with a stove. (not likely). So, that leaves the burden on me. This brings me to the second chest crushing realization. I have been eating a little unhealthy with all these restaurant meals. A big reason for this has been the travels in October and November. I am grounded until Dec 23. So I took some action…

It’s been a while since I had a fast food burger. I can’t even remember the last one I ate. In Hong Kong I only had a couple hours to go out and see the city before I had to be back on the ship. With not much knowledge of Hong Kong I ventured into the city to wonder around. Being in a huge city with multicultures made me feel like I was at home in New York with a Chinese spin to it. I was impressed with the city but like I said I only have a couple hours.

mac and cheese with cheez-it crust

Yestraday I went to my Uncle Toma nd Aunt Lorraine’s house for T-Day. The table totalled 23 people and it was covered with food not once but twice. The amount of food is staggering, as usual. Above is one of teh more unique items that hit the table. Keri and Chris turned the normal mac and cheese on its head by adding a peculiar but delicious crust. CHEEZ-IT!!! Amazing addition to an already tasty dish.

I am keeping it short today, I have to continue working on digesting. I hope everyone had a great Turkey day and has a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

P.I.E. WITH Amit, Ishita and Seth

Can you beat a home cooked vegetarian (almost) business lunch? Rhetorical, please hold your breath for a moment. I was in Hastings, New York with Amit to meet with Seth and Ishita around a few projects in the percolator. Only days before Thanksgiving I certainly have food on the brain and this gastronomical surprise was the perfect easement into my second to last business day before holiday.

If you are a faithful reader, you have undoubtedly heard of Amit before. Creator or Photojojo and Jelly, he has been my partner on the Yahoo! and Jelly “Jellytalk” series. Most recently, besides a red eye from SF and a quick nap on my couch, he has put out an awesome photo book with all sorts of great ideas in it. You know I rarely plug but, this is a great ‘lil holiday gift from a super creative place.

Seth I had met once before at a Jellytalk in Brooklyn. Although he loves to complain about the space I know he had a good time, at least during the talk. Seth’s office reads like a neatly organized exploration in fun and interesting. Not surprising considering his background, occupation and writing. His one line bio, (Seth is a writer, a speaker and an agent of change) may need another comma and the word cook added. Thanks Seth for the delicious lunch.

Ishita made the tea and kept the meeting on track. She is Seth’s assistant and creator fear.less, an online magazine that empowers people through unique stories of overcoming fear. There seems to be some discrepancy over Ishita’s role. After further clarification it is unclear if Ishita works for Seth, if Seth works for Ishita or if they are partners in crime. One thing is clear, Ishita’s official title is “Head of Hoopla”. That sounds like the boss to me. I’m just saying.

This was perhaps the most productive and tasty meeting I will have all week. Thanks again guys for the hospitality.

What we ate:
Brown rice with kimchi, hummus, egg and tofu

When someone tells you they are taking you to the outskirts of town to a parking lot where great food is made in an old airstream trailer, YOU JUST GO. My friend Brad did just this on my recent trip to Austin. As the story goes, two friends wanted to start making crepes and well…teh vid will explain it all.

You can’t hate a job that takes you into the heart of San Francisco, buys you a sandwich and lets you “work” in the park over looking the bay for an afternoon. That’s what went down a few days ago as the Buzz Team and I started work on our next set of BIG ideas. This video will give you a peek into where the “magic” starts and how we do what we do.

India Speed Round

Munnar, India

I have finally caught up on all the India posts. Just in time too, I have so much to share from my Santa Barbera and Austin trips. To close off India I played a sort of “blank” meal game. The four stories below are the outcome of the questions I asked myself about eating in India. I think these questions cover the spiritual, fearful, gastronomical and monumental aspects of my journey.

I asked myself these four questions. I hope you all enjoyed the India fun. Next time you take a trip perhaps you can ask yourself these four questions and let me know your answers. I’d love to hear from you.

1. What’s the memorable meal you had?
2. What’s the calmest meal you had?
3. What’s the riskiest meal you had?
4. What’s the best meal you had?

Ohh…btw… The above pic is of my breakfast teh morning I woke up in Munnar. Fresh idlis with a curry sauce and a coconut chutney. Par for the course by day 12 in India.

Kochi, India

People say India is completely crazy and that it fries your nerves. They are right to an extent. As a New yorker and avid traveler i think I was able to deal with the constant horns, movement, shuffling of people, spitting, cow crossing and blazing sun. But from time to time even I needed a refuge…
