Crab Cracker Seafood Bar – Ketchikan from Anthony Anello on Vimeo.

My last day in Alaska was a wet and cold day in Ketchikan. I decided to take a food tour and then do a walking tour around the town. I started back at Burger Queen and ordered another burger. This time got it cooked medium and it was really good. It lived up to the hype that it has been given. Looking forward to many more Burger Queen burgers when I am back here next summer. However, everyone else said I had to try the fish and chips in town. So instead of having ANOTHER burger I went searching around for some fish and chips. I found a little crab bar in a mall I walked into called the Crab Cracker Seafood Bar. There were 3 types of fish to choose from. The waitress recommended the Snapper…

London, England

This I saw in the Design Museum in London. I didn’t think you could actually make ice much better than it is but now I guess you can. The frugal side of me got the better and I didn’t purchase. Instead I opted for this memorable 1000 word picture.

London, England

London, England, not my favorite place to eat. But, that just makes it more interesting. It means you need to dig in and poke around more. Talk to people, find out what they like. That’s how you find what is good. I was in London for an entire week so there was a lot of “finding” to be done…

Salt of the Earth

London, England

Anthony recently came up with a new category, forking nasty. We have pretty good sniffers and not sos often do we stumble into a situation where the food, drink, service or ambiance stinks so much that it through our olfactory systems into the shop for a tune up. BUT, it does happen. In the case of today’s post, I was in London. The place is know not known for great food to begin with but I have to say its getting better. More on that a post or two from now. Back to the nasty.

It was a long week of work and I was just off a sensory overload in Mumbai. I was heading to the office and needed a nice big bottle of water to get me through the day. Being and Europe, home of the bubbly or flat option, I opted for some lightly carbonated Catalonia water. It was nicely packaged and the description explained how natural, fresh and untouched the water was. The bottling process was clean, ancient and the water came from an out of the way place that sounded exotic. All great. But, as you know, taste (and smell) is what ultimately counts. First swig was nice. But as soon as that bubble H2O passed my esophagus and the air hit the back of my palette I tasted the sea. Yes, the sea. The ocean. The continuous body of salt water that covers 72 percent of the Earth’s surface. Needless to say this did not quench my thirst. But I persevered. “Perhaps its an acquired taste” i thought. A half a bottle later I realized I was wrong. It was an acquired stomach ache. And i have an iron stomach (at least I like to think that). Moral of this post? When buying fancy, foreign water check their salinity levels before purchasing.

On my last contract on the ship a buddy and I were talking about the best burgers we’ve had. He mentioned to look for a burger in Ketchikan Alaska called Burger Queen. Now I am on the Volendam and the beginning of my contract is in Alaska and I finally made it there. Ketchikan is a small little town, as most Alaskan towns and are known for their salmon. However, I was looking for that burger. I’ll get the salmon next week when I’m here again.

Kelsey and I wanted to check out a Museum while in Quebec and got out early. The museum had an exhibit were you stand in a box that looks like a room in your house and it shakes to show you what an earthquake would feel like. Both of us live on the east coast so we have never felt a quake before. They let you feel the shake of a category 4, 5 and then 7…

The night before, we passed by a rare sighting of a restaurant that was not Italian or a crepe place. We made sure we took advantage of it the next night for dinner and went to Cotes a Cotes. What was intriguing is one of Kesley’s favorite apps spinach artichoke dip was on the outside menu.

Wow, what a tough country. I am humbled. Although the above video shows great food and a seemingly nice slice of India there is much more to the story than that. I think of myself as a good traveller and a great eater, but India knocked me back. I went into this trip with the idea that I was going to eat and explore the deepest corners of Mumbai. My friends at home, who have been to India, warned me about the shocking contrast I would find. They had explained that the food, particularly street food, was dangerous and WILL get me sick. I heard their plea but pushed it as far back in my mind as I could. Through out this post I will show pictures that are appropriate for the words you are reading but not so appropriate for a food blog. Some are quite disturbing so please, if you choose to read on understand that this post is very different from the usual.

Breakfast the second day was good. We walked a little away from downtown on St. Jean Street. We stepped outside the walls of the fortress to explore what else this city had to offer. The walls of the fortress surround downtown Quebec. There were more shops and restaurants; many of them were crepe brunch places.
