Memphis

Yesterday I checked out the Memphis in May BBQ competition. I have wanted to check out this festival for about 5 years and so, after Miami I headed out here to Memphis to eat some pork. I have 72 hours to eat as many ribs as I can so here we go…

A few friends and I headed into Bilbao Spain to go see the Guggenheim Museum. It was spectacular. Some really cool and fun art was on display. Check out the vimeo for upcoming videos from Spain. All four of us wanted to check out the city a bit and grab (what else) a bite to eat…

Miami

I have been in Miami the past 3 days for the WOMM-U conference. I had a little talk to do and I needed to reconnect with some old Womma peeps. This time the conference was moved from Downtown Miami to the Ritz South Beach. Needless to say the hotel, pool, restaurant and service held up to the swanky, sexy South Beach standard i expected. I also had my bosses along for the trip. Brian and Sean were making the trek from San Fran to Miami for their first Womma event. Because of this, I wanted to make sure they had an educational and fun experience. Naturally, I turned to my beautiful, foul-mouthed, food loving friend May for a recommendation. Why May? Because, she had been raving about a certain restaurant down there for months. May doesn’t live in South Beach but is there enough to know what’s what. So I took her advice…

Anytime I can get off the ship I go. When I am on the ship I do some research to see what to do and where to eat at ports. I searched online and found a place called Bazar. The description said trendy and cheap. Right up my alley…

Last saturday was our first Reel Tasty Brooklyn dinner. For those hearing that for the first time, it’s our summer supper club where we screen a movie on a 2 story building while feeding our guests some of our latest gastronomic creations. Aimee and I had a great time and we think our guests did as well. We are both really excited about planning our next evening. Right now, we’re thinking Saturday, May 30. This will be solidified by the end of the week, so check back and grab your spot.

The weather Saturday was touch and go right up until 7pm when guests were scheduled to arrive. We decided to set the table outside and hope for the best. Turns out not a drop of rain fell, the sun even made a brief appearance. Before movie time guests mingled in the back of the deck while sipping a 2007 Tapena Spanish table wine, Singha Thai beer or 333 Vietnamese beer. We set out some London Bar mix (recipe at bottom) and apricots stuffed with pistachios and gorgonzola cheese. The snack table was rounded out with some cheese, gourmet crackers and cucumber chips…

We started the day in Harwich England and 2.5 hours later we were in the heart of London. We were running around London checking out Big Ben, Parliament, The changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, and going up the London tower. We only had 3.5 hours to do it all so in some cases we were literally RUNNING AROUND like I said earlier. With all the running around we saved enough time to have some grub. It also worked up an appetite…

MOM

Yesterday was dedicated to Mom’s all over the country. If your mom is anything like ours, she has a lot to do with what, how and when you cook. I guess you could say she shaped our cooking passion. Along with our Grandma, our mom encouraged us to explore food. She made us get dirty in the kitchen helping out when we wanted, and didn’t want to, with mundane and monumental tasks. For that I thank her.

We spent Mother’s day at my Aunt’s house. The house consisted of my parents, my aunt and uncle, Matt, Kel, Brian and Christine (my cousins). We decided it would be a hodge podge of food and we would eat in a sort of rolling method. Of course part of the deal was that the mom’s were to stay out of the kitchen but that proved to be impossible.

It rolled like this:

Olives
fried cheese w/cranberry sauce
cheese plate and crackers
hunnus and pita chips
shrimp cocktail
scallops
baked cheese with apricot
hot wings
pork chops
apricot chicken
bbq chicken
eggplant parmesan
celery root orange salad
romaine strawberry salad
grilled vegetables
orzo salad
coffee
homemade rocky road ice cream

Ohh yeah, and we put down about 8 bottles of wine during all that. In the end, Mom’s had a good time and so did the rest of us. THANKS AGAIN MOM FOR ALL THE COOKING LOVE OVER THE YEARS! I hope all the other mom’s out there had as special a day as we did.

May 4th was my first day off the cruise ship in about a week and a half. We had just finished crossing the Atlantic Ocean headed to the Baltic region in Europe. Our first stop was in Lisbon, Portugal and needless to say I was very excited to get off the ship and have a great tapas dinner. We had an over night there so I new I had a few meals to eat. First stop, dinner…

Rub bbq

In preparation for my weekend in Memphis, and to satiate Bennett’s craving for USA BBQ, we had some supper at R.U.B. I jumped on the meat plate (above pic). I augmented a delicious plate of pastrami, brisket and pulled pork with a quarter rack of St. Louis style ribs. Slaw and greens for good measure. Washed it down with a sweet tea. But that is the standard. The app was what got me…
