Ali's Birthday Dinner

I have been promising my friend Ali a meal for over a year. She finally cornered me on her birthday. Let me quickly explain a few things about Ali. We met on a blind date. It lasted 7 hours. Her last name is my work email address with an extra “N”. jannello and janello respectively. Romantic us didn’t work out, but friend us worked out great. Although, that extra “N” is always a bone of contention…

Columbian Home cooking

Marcella’s mom was in from Columbia…wait…maybe it was Miami….oh no…it was Columbia….actually,no…..it was on her way to India. She is an amazing woman as you might imagine. That’s a whole other post. Never-the-less, before she was off to her next destination they invited me over for some home cooked Columbian food, her home country. Now, I love South America and Latin cooking. You all know that I always find that little hole in the wall or street vendor that sells the best “fill in teh blank” in all of “enter country name” BUT, there is something about home cooking that trumps it all. When I say this was one of the most authentic meals of my life I am not exaggerating. The food just kept coming and I just kept eating. Above are black beans. Not soup. Although, I thought maybe that was soup. It was NOT!

EAT: Dinosaur BBQ

Last Friday we took the journey up to Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem. My Uncle had bought my brother and I two gift certificates to the Upstate New York based BBQ joint and we wasted no time using them. It was a cold night but the idea of those super tasty wings kept us warm on the short walk from the subway to 131st st and the river, their downstate home. As we approached, the neon glow of the letters heated us up even more than the brisk walk and imaginary food running through our minds. Although, once inside the 2 hour wait put a bit of a “slow roast” on our hunger…

Spitzer's Corner, LES, NYC

For Rojeh’s birthday, Seth and I took him to Spitzer’s for a little celebratory meal. To know Rojeh, means you know that celebrating anything with him is like pulling teeth. Paying for the meal is like dragging a mule to a trough of organic craft beer. Seth and I managed. In the process we hit Spitzer’s for all it was worth. You can not pass up the pickles pictured above. I mean Gus just has this down…
